Student-Led IEP Facilitation

More and more school districts are requesting professional development to help support student-led IEP meetings.

This one-day workshop is for participants who have completed the initial FIEP workshop and have implemented the Key2ed facilitation model in their IEP meetings. It provides instruction to IEP facilitators in successfully preparing students to co-facilitate their own IEP meetings. The workshop is designed to teach how to set-up, conduct and have follow through with the student being a co-facilitator in the process.

Participants will be prepared to deploy skills learned and practiced through the training the very next day.

Why should I attend this workshop?

Once IEP meeting leaders have learned facilitation skills, they may want to use those skills to empower the students to actively participate in the decision-making at their own meetings. IEP meetings where the student is the co-facilitator/leader of his/her own meeting provides the student with important self-advocacy skills. More and more school districts are requesting professional development to help support student participation in IEP meetings.

Does this workshop teach students how to facilitate their own IEP Meeting?

No. It provides instruction to IEP facilitators in successfully preparing students to co-facilitate their own IEP meetings. The workshop is designed to teach IEP meeting facilitators how to engage the students in their own IEP meeting. The workshop presents information on a full continuum of student participation from simply being present and listening to the information to co-facilitating their own meetings. The workshop is designed to teach how to set-up, conduct and have follow through with the student playing a role during each stage.

Should workshop participants have facilitated IEP meetings before attending?

Yes. This training is for participants who have completed the initial FIEP workshop and have implemented the Key2ed facilitation model in their IEP meetings. That experience allows them to more effectively work with students in co-facilitating their own IEP meetings.

How long does this workshop last?

This is a one-day workshop with a maximum of thirty participants. During the workshop, participants will work on activities that help them determine the level of student participation that is appropriate for each student, and prepare students to participate in planning and conducting the meeting, and implementing their own IEPs This preparation helps remove any trepidation or anxiety the student might feel.
